Have you ever just wanted to create a shortcut for a program, file, or object on your computer but just didn’t know how and could not find step-by-step instructions?

Creating a Shortcut to a Program or File

To create a shortcut on the desktop to a program or file, there are two possible methods to choose from.

 Method 1 

1. Right-click an open area on the desktop, point to New, and then click Shortcut. 

2. Click Browse. 

3. Locate the program or file to which you want to create a shortcut, click the program or file, click Open, and then click Next.

 4. Type a name for the shortcut. If a Finish button appears at the bottom of the dialog box, click it. If a Next button appears at the bottom of the dialog box, click it, click the icon you want to use for the shortcut, and then click Finish. 

Method 2 

1. Click Start, point to Programs, and then right-click the program you want to create the shortcut to. 

2. Click Create Shortcut. 

3. The shortcut is now at the end of the Programs list. For example, if you created a shortcut to Microsoft Word, to find that program, click Start, and then point to Programs. You will find the shortcut, named "Microsoft Word (2)" (without the quotation marks), at the bottom of the Program list.

 4. Drag the shortcut to the Desktop.

Creating Shortcuts to Other Objects 

To create a shortcut on the desktop to other objects (such as a folder or computer), follow these steps: 

1. Use My Computer or Windows Explorer to locate the object to which you want to create a shortcut. 

2. Right-click the object, and then click Create Shortcut. 

3. Drag the new shortcut to an open area on the desktop. 

Helpful Tips 

To modify settings for a shortcut, right-click the shortcut, and then click Properties. Settings that can be modified include the key combination used to start the shortcut and whether the program starts minimized, maximized, or normally. 

            To delete a shortcut, right-click the shortcut, and then click Delete. Or, you may drag the shortcut to the Recycle Bin. When you delete a shortcut to an object, the original object is not deleted. 

After you create a shortcut to a printer, you can print documents by dragging the documents to the printer shortcut. The program used to print the document will open briefly and then close.

Laptops today all have Wi-Fi (wireless Internet) built-in, allowing people to connect to the Internet from almost anywhere. For security reasons, compatibility, or other reasons, you may want to enable and disable the Wi-Fi on your laptop.

How to enable Wi-Fi on a laptop

Wi-Fi can be enabled by performing any of the steps below.

Enable with laptop Wi-Fi button

Some laptops have an On/Off button or switch for the Wi-Fi connection, like the button shown in the picture. It is usually found on the front edge of the laptop or above the keyboard. Find the button or switch and make sure it is enabled. When enabled, the button should be illuminated as blue, or the switch should be in the On position.

Enable with laptop Fn and function key

Some laptops enable and disable Wi-Fi using the Fn key and one of the function keys (F1-F12). As seen in the picture, some laptops use Fn and F12 key to enable and disable Wi-Fi and shows an orange LED when disabled and blue when enabled.

Enable Wi-Fi in Windows

Look in the Windows notification area to find the icon for Wi-Fi or wireless Internet. Right-click with your mouse on the icon and select the option for enabling (or turning off) the Wi-Fi device in the pop-up menu. If no Enable option is available in the pop-up menu, there may be an option called Open Network and Sharing Center. If so, select this option and then select Change adapter settings. Once the icon for the wireless network card is seen, right-click it and select Enable.

Note

In Windows 8, when you right-click the Wi-Fi icon, check to see if Airplane Mode is turned on. If it's, turn it off to enable the wireless network card.

The Wi-Fi adapter can also be enabled in the Control Panel, click the Network and Sharing Center option, then click the Change adapter settings link in the left navigation pane. Right-click the Wi-Fi adapter and select Enable.

Enable Wi-Fi in Windows Device Manager

Access the Device Manager by right-clicking with your mouse on the My Computer icon on your desktop or in the Windows Start menu. Select Properties from the pop-up menu, click the Hardware tab in the window that opens up, and click the Device Manager button.

Note

In Windows Vista and later, there is no Hardware tab. Click the Device Manager link in the System window.

Find the Wi-Fi adapter in the list of hardware devices. Right-click the adapter name and select Enable from the pop-up menu. If no Wi-Fi adapter is found in Device Manager, the Wi-Fi adapter drivers are not installed.

Enable Wi-Fi in BIOS setup

Finally, there is also the option of enabling the Wi-Fi device in the computer's BIOS setup. However, it is very unlikely that the Wi-Fi device would be disabled in BIOS.

How to disable Wi-Fi on a laptop

Wi-Fi can be disabled by performing any of the steps below.

Disable with laptop Wi-Fi button

Wi-Fi adapters are also available for desktop computers. The Wi-Fi button mentioned above is not available with most desktop computers. However, there is the possibility that the Wi-Fi adapter itself (e.g., an external version, like a USB Wi-Fi adapter) has an On/Off button or switch. If there is no button or witch, disconnecting the adapter from the computer disables the device.

If the Wi-Fi adapter is not an external device, it is either an internal PCI expansion card or built onto the motherboard. When you install the software for the Wi-Fi adapter, an icon will then show in the Windows notification area, giving you access to enable and disable the device. Alternatively, you can disable and enable the Wi-Fi adapter through the Device Manager or the BIOS.

 1. Rename multiples files

An Administrator Account Is Required

Changing the password on another user's account is easy, no matter which version of Windows you have, provided you have an account with administrator-level privileges. See What Version of Windows Do I Have? if you're not sure which of those several versions of Windows is installed on your computer.

Warning:-

When you change a Windows password from outside the account, which is what you're doing when you change another user's password, the user you're changing the password for will lose all access to EFS-encrypted files, personal certificates, and any stored passwords like those for network resources and website passwords. Most users don't have EFS-encrypted files and the loss of stored passwords probably isn't a big deal, but we wanted you to know the consequence of resetting a password in this way.

Your Windows account must be configured as an administrator if you want to change another user's password. If not, you may need to try this Windows password reset trick.

How to Change Another User's Password in Windows 10 or 8

1. Open the Windows 8 or 10 Control Panel.

On touch interfaces, the easiest way to open Control Panel in Windows 10 or Windows 8 is through its link on the Start menu (or Apps screen in Windows 8), but the Power User Menu is probably faster if you have a keyboard or mouse.

2. On Windows 10, select User Accounts. It's called User Accounts and Family Safety in Windows 8.

If the View by setting is on Large icons or Small icons, then you won't see this link. Choose User Accounts instead and skip to Step 4.

3. Select User Accounts.

4. Several links down on the Make changes to your user account area of the User Accounts window, select Manage another account.

Tip:-

If you don't see Password protected listed somewhere under the username, then that user doesn't have a password set up and should be able to log in without entering anything in the password field.

6. Now that you're in the Make changes to [username]'s account screen, choose Change the password.

Tip:-

Don't see a Change the password link? This probably means that the user you want to change the password for logs into Windows 10 or Windows 8 with a Microsoft account, not a typical local account. It's even easier to reset a Microsoft account password.

7. On the Change [username]'s password screen, enter a new password in both the first and second text boxes.

8. In the last text box, you're asked to Type a password hint. This step is not required.

Tip:-

Since you're probably changing this person's password for them because they've forgotten it, it's fine if you want to skip the hint. After the person regains access to Windows 8/10 again, have him or her change the password to something more private and set up a hint then.

9. Select Change password to save the password change.

10.Close the Change an Account window and any other open windows.

11. Sign out, or restart the computer, and have the person you reset the password for try logging in to Windows 8 or 10 again.

Once logged in, be proactive and either have the user create a Windows 8 or Windows 10 password reset disk or switch to a Microsoft account, either of which will provide an easier way to get a new password in the future.
